Quality controller to outsource ISI mark inspection work

August 5th, 2008 - 7:11 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

Lucknow, Aug 5(IANS) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will outsource its inspection work in order to check illegal usage of its Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mark in Uttar Pradesh, officials here said Tuesday. The BIS, the nationalstandards agency of India involved in the development of technical standards, product quality and management systemcertifications and consumer affairs, has invited tenders for outsourcing in all districts of the state and a few districts of Uttarakhand, said BIS director (Lucknow) R.K. Sharma.

Thanks to the shortage of BIS staff in Uttar Pradesh, the usage of fake ISI mark and certificates has increased in the state. The BIS had received such complaints from the neighbouring Uttarakhand state also.

“A similar initiative was taken in the National Capital Region (around Delhi) sometimes ago and it was very successful,” Sharma told IANS.

“The selected companies will be conducting raids in markets and factories to check the illegal usage and officials of BIS will assist them,” added Sharma.

Besides having experience in a related field, the participating companies should also have an annual turnover of Rs.2 million, he said.

The BIS, a government certifying agency for quality of products and a member of International Organization for Standardization (ISO), was earlier called Indian Standards
