Our mission is to ensure the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. To achieve that, we develop and enforce reliability standards; assess reliability annually via 10-year and seasonal forecasts; monitor the bulk power system; evaluate users, owners, and operators for preparedness; and educate, train, and certify industry personnel. NERC is a self-regulatory organization, subject to oversight by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and governmental authorities in Canada.

NERC CEO: Electric Industry has “Responsibility to Succeed” on Renewable Integration • March 3, 2009

Rick Sergel, president and CEO of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), urged the electric industry to focus on solutions to the technical challenges posed by large-scale integration of renewable resources in his keynote address at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s technical conference today.

In his remarks, Sergel challenged the audience to get down to business, saying “The need to reliably integrate renewable resources is no longer a question, it is a priority.” According to data in NERC’s 2008 Long Term Reliability Assessment, 145,000 MW of wind generation is proposed to be added to the grid over the next 10 years – though all of it will not be built.
