electricity Market - grid control

Electricity market in the palm of your hand

The liberalized energy market is a volatile environment. Communication and agreement are just as important to you as the electricity itself. You are in constant contact with the other market players: grid operators, consumers, producers and the regulator.
In an electricity market characterized by increasingly complex problems, you need solutions that are ever more ingenious and flexible. The need to test out new operating strategies and network philosophies within your organization is consequently growing all the time.
Fortunately, however, groping in the dark to discover where a proposed course of action will take you is now a thing of the past. FLEXNET is your guide to the future!
FLEXNET is a business simulation consisting of a game board plus software, supported by four professionals who know the energy market through and through. In a first for this industry, FLEXNET links technology to policy and to human response. On the game board, an electricity grid is built up from a starting situation, complete with production and consumption units. You can then simulate planned and unplanned events and third-party developments, and see what impact they have on your own ideas and strategies. The software calculates the resulting energy and cash flows, bringing every overload and penalty to light.
You build up your grid out of existing components and components still to be developed. These new (flexible) components give you better insight into the scope offered by flexible grid control.
FLEXNET can show you, for example, what's likely to happen if subsidies are withdrawn or if new regulations are introduced. Equally, you can explore the implications of power import or the creation of offshore wind farms. FLEXNET also takes account of the kinds of unexpected event that occur in practice, such as faults, client relocations and wind fluctuations. The inclusion of such 'random' occurrences means that the simulation reflects real life with uncanny accuracy.
Running the FLEXNET business simulation takes a day and requires eight teams. Two producers, two consumers and four grid operators face each other in the game. Interaction between the players provides insight and amusement, and stimulates the planning and refinement of new strategies in anticipation of others' activities or new regulations. Throughout the experience, you are supported by four experienced consultants who guide you through the simulation, the learning process and the analysis of how participants behave when developing and refining their strategies.
Ahead of your FLEXNET session, an intake interview is arranged in order to identify your organization's particular learning goals. These goals form the baseline position for FLEXNET.
The FLEXNET daily fee covers a professional guidance team, use of the game board and software, and an unforgettable learning experience for eight to sixteen people.
The technological side of FLEXNET is taken care of by KEMA, while the behavioral aspects are managed by a human behavior consultant. Pricing on request.
'I never knew there was so much to grid control.'
'It's an invitation to test out strategies.'

'You get outcomes that a purely technical simulation would never have thrown up.'
FLEXNET workshop for Dutch utilities, 5 October 2004
'KEMA's FLEXNET board game is proving very popular with energy companies who want to introduce new personnel to the workings of the market.'
