The Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia and AWB Ltd have jointly hosted a visit by noodle expert Mr Masayuki Kikawa to Australia."The visit included a four-week visit to Perth, where Mr Kikawa is participating with the Department's noodle sensory panel in the evaluation of advanced wheat breeding lines for suitability for the Japanese udon market," said Graham Crosbie, Manager of Grain Products Research at the Department."Mr Kikawa, who is from Nippon Flour Mills Co. Ltd, is the sixth Japanese noodle expert to have worked at the Department since its visiting noodle expert's program began in 1990."Mr Kikawa's visit was organised through the Flour Millers Association of Japan. Also participating in the tests is Larisa Cato, noodle specialist from AWB's Agrifood Technology, Werribee."Mr Kikawa's visit was very important to ensure that future udon wheat varieties meet the stringent requirements of the Japanese market, and that Western Australia's reputation as the leading supplier of udon wheat to this market was maintained," Mr Crosbie said.
